ELWOOD`S BLUES
====================
As you may already have noticed, FOP4 was not created by The Raven, but
by me - ELWOOD - the new lad! You can probably tell by the name that my
main influence is blues, which should come out in the music.
As usual, all of the music was created in the BEST tracker - OCTAMED,
on a good old 1 meg A500...
THE MUSIC
===============
1) Lorraine
This song was written for my girlfriend, Lorraine (hence the name).
It has a mixture of styles, including some blues. It`s probably more
polished than most of the other songs, but it`s pretty memorable.
It`s one of the first of this kind that I ever wrote (ie. a mix of
styles using the same samples)
2) Electric Blues
This is one of my best. Although it starts reasonably slowly, it builds
up with piano, then organ, then drums, then the actual song, which starts
with the guitar. There is certainly a lot of feeling in this one, as I
wrote it just after I lost someone close to me. I tried to write the
beginning of the song as if I was actually playing it in a `gig` (I`m
in a band at school) to make it sound as realistic as possible.
3) JazzRaveII
Well this is value for money! This song alone is over 10 minutes long!
It takes its time to get started, but then the guitar solos and organ
solos come in. The `rave` part is the drumbeat. Yeah, I know it`s not
very ravey - but I hate rave, ok! The song may be a bit overlong but..
um... I don`t really care! If you`re looking (or listening) for a strong
melody, you won`t find it here!
4) The Promise
Once again, the title of the song has very little to do with the music.
And once again, I`ve put several styles into it - I believe that in a
music disk, the most should be made of the samples in the songs, if you
see what I mean. After all, its the samples that take up all the room, not
the blocks... Notice the mixture of samples and synthsounds.
5) The Chip Song
Well, it uses chip sounds. It`s a song. And it has `the` in the title.
It`s also inflenced by my idols from the C64 (Rob Hubbard and Martin
Galway). Again, it takes its time getting started, but it`s worth
sticking with, to hear the blues stuff nearer to the end. I tried to make
this a powerful chipsong, which is actually very hard to do! I think it
has worked, though, due to the fact that instead of bombarding the
listener with all of the heavy stuff first, it builds up slowly, and then
explodes into a blues type part at first, then back to the original
melody, then a solo part.
6) Jazz Part 1
This is a very small song, and only uses about 3 samples. This is actually
quite old and... erm... I`m afraid I can think of nothing else to say
about it. Just listen to it, alright?!
7) Say
Again, I`ve tried to inject a lot of different styles of music into one
module, so this is another very long module (you really are getting value
for money here - there`s 8 hours of music on this disk. Maybe.) As with
ALL of my music, my main object is to make people listen to the music more
than just once. One listening NEVER does a piece of music justice.
Therefore, the main tunes, and especially the choruses, should be memorable,
and recognisable. If possible, I also always try to `suggest` a chorus is
coming up (if there is a chorus) by slowing the tempo, or changing a
chord. That way, even if it`s only subconciously, the listener should
think `aaah, a chorus, I can hum along to this.` Alternatively, they may
think `this is crap. I could be watching Neighbours instead of listening
to this`.
8) Play Those Blues
This is a VERY old song and it`s got some pianos in it.
CLEVER COMMANDS
===================
It has been said that I place the use of clever commands above the importance
of the melody. Well I don`t. So there.
